The jebel Ouesslat is an imposing mountain range covering approximately 135,000 hectares and overlooks the plain Ouesslatia Merguellil and east, the plain of Kairouan in the west and south Haffouz depression.
Although difficult access and poor in water resources, Jebel Ouesslat was always busy. The presence of prehistoric man dating back to ancient times and continues up to 5,000 years before present (Neolithic period).
This massif contains habitats from this period and an impressive and unique paintings and prints, located on the walls of rock shelters and caves. It represents, in the state of our knowledge, the richest region in rock art from Tunisia.
Each station has different styles and themes. Through the paintings and engravings, prehistoric man proves essential to the existence of wildlife has disappeared from Tunisia.
Thus, the white rhinoceros, the great buffalo antique, antelope, giraffe, hyena, ostrich, lived in our countries. Pets are also well illustrated by scenes of pasture (paddock), the oxen, goats, sheep, accompanied by a domestic dog well known: the Sloughi.
The precious details about the daily life of prehistoric man in Jebel Ouesslat are revealed, such as hunting (hunting scene of Ayn Khanfous) and his family life (Dar Mellah). He also represented some figures probably related to his spiritual life and his worldview.
Unfortunately, the prehistoric sites (rock art and escargotières) are extremely vulnerable and undergo rapid degradation and progressive but irreversible.
the Jebel Ouesslat could become both an ecological park (fauna and flora) and archaeological exceptional.

The word kairouan.org
Tunisia cradle of civilizations has always talked about 3,000 years of history when our country is full of treasures still buried; Presence human dating back 5,000 years is detectable in the region Oueslatia.
Recall that only thirteen sets of rock art sites found in this title on the World Heritage List of Unesco: they are Algeria, Australia, Libya, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, France, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and Norway. None has been on the list in Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, the United States or Canada.
It would be highly desirable that the authorities are looking into the matter and send as quickly to a Unesco world heritage classification file . The caves of Jebel Oueslat could they one day become the fourth in Africa after those of South Africa (uKhahlamba / DP) Algeria (Tassili n'Ajjer) and Libya (Acacus) Unesco World Heritage?
Oueslatia region will be in the very near future, hopefully, a unique ecotourism destination of its kind. This art
nonrenewable degrades quickly and disappears under the influence of natural phenomena. It is imperative to protect what exists in the form in which the works have survived
